Hydrogen Headstart Launches Next $2b Funding Round

Round 2 of the Hydrogen Headstart program is now open.

The Headstart program is administered by ARENA. It will provide up to $2 billion in revenue support for large-scale renewable hydrogen projects.

Expressions of Interest will be open from 10 October 2025 and will close 5pm 9 December 2025.

The new funding round will build on learnings from Round 1. There will be additional focus on supporting projects that target high priority use cases. ARENA is calling for projects that aim to reduce the cost of renewable hydrogen production by:

  • innovative plant construction and design to reduce capital costs
  • improving efficiency of electrolysers
  • considering flexible operation and other methods to reduce the cost of renewable electricity
  • improving end-use infrastructure for priority use cases.
