How ready is South Sudan to face the next flood or drought ?
A new assessment by the WMO HydroHub offers fresh insights into the country's hydrometeorological capacities-and the gaps that must be addressed to protect communities. With backing from the Swiss Development Cooperation, this milestone report sets a path towards stronger early warning systems. These findings will inform future action through HydroHub, CREWS East Africa and the Early Warning for All initiative.
South Sudan continues to be affectedby the impacts of water-related disasters, including the devastating floods of 2019 that displaced millions. In support of national efforts to strengthen resilience and preparedness, the WMO HydroHub, with funding from the Swiss Development Cooperation, has completed a Capacity and Needs Assessment of the country's National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) .
This assessment is a key milestone toward improving the delivery of hydrometeorological services in South Sudan. It lays the groundwork for the development of a strategic roadmap and will guide future HydroHub initiatives in the country. The findings will also feed into regional and global efforts, including CREWS East Africa and the Early Warning for All Action Plan.
