Iconic Territory experience on this weekend

Northern Territory Major Events Company

The Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta returns in full force this Sunday, with Mindil Beach set to host thousands of eager boat builders and spectators ready to witness the famous Battle of Mindil. The event sees teams battle it out in homemade boats crafted from empty cans, plastic bottles and milk cartons. Some go the distance, many don't, much to the delight of onlookers.

The Beer Can Regatta kicks off from 10am, with boat racing in the afternoon, and includes a range of competitions including special Father's Day events, thong throwing and sandcastle building. Entry is by gold coin donation.

Established in 1974, the first Beer Can Regatta drew a crowd of around 22,000 people, which was roughly half the population of Darwin at that time. It continues to delight and is well-known nationally. The event is supported by the Northern Territory Government through the Northern Territory Major Events Company.

Quotes from NT Major Events Company CEO, Tim Watsford:

"The Beer Can Regatta is one of those very Territory events, where you kind of need to see it to believe it. It's a fun day for all ages at one of the Top End's most stunning locations – what's not to love?

"It's fantastic to see the Beer Can Regatta back in its usual format after last year's event had to be reduced in size and scope. Get yourself down to Mindil Beach for a day full of laughs and marvel at the ingenuity of some boat builders, and the wishful thinking of others!"

Quotes from Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta President, Connell Brannelly:

"The Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta is back at Mindil Beach this year with the iconic Battle of Mindil returning. There's something for everyone at this event, so bring the whole family along for a great day out.

"The Beer Can Regatta is hosted by the Lions Clubs of Casuarina, Litchfield, Nightcliff and Palmerston, all of which have contributed greatly to ensuring the event's success."
