Iconic Walking Tracks To Undergo Works

Castle Hill's iconic and well-trodden walking tracks are getting some much-needed tender love and care over the coming months, paving the way for a better experience for the thousands of daily users.

Mayor Nick Dametto said part of Townsville's identity was woven in the web of walking tracks that made their way up and around the city's iconic landmark.

"Not only is Townsville centered around our iconic hill, but thousands of locals and visitors alike choose to make trekking their way up to the top part of their daily ritual, so it's important the trails can keep up with the demand," Cr Dametto said.

"Townsville is a city for everyone, and our world-class tracks are ideally placed to show off our beautiful nature and lifestyle.

"Given the recent weather and the thousands of dedicated daily walkers, some sections are looking a little worse for wear.

"The good news is the crew undertaking the work will only be working on one track at a time. This will enable the other tracks to remain open for use during the project."

The track remediation works have been awarded to local contractor Ausfield, and as part of the work the crew will reinforce track edges, clear vegetation and rocks, repair damaged surfaces and remove any protruding branches or roots.

"We're so lucky to have these terrific tracks right at our fingertips, making it easier to live an active and healthy lifestyle here in the best part of the world.

"I know how much our community value these kinds of activities, which is why I am committed to ensuring that we continue to invest in our city's natural livability."

Works to remediate sections of Castle Hill tracks will officially kick off on Monday and are expected to take around two months to complete. Normal work hours are from 6am to 6pm Monday to Sunday.
