ICRC calls for immediate steps to stop violence against civilians and prevent further escalation

ICRC

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is deeply concerned by the intensification of armed violence in parts of the West Bank leading to numerous civilian casualties.

''It is unacceptable that civilians are injured or killed in these episodes of violence. It is very worrying that children in schools nearby witness such levels of violence, and too often are victims of it," said Arnaud Meffre, ICRC's head of the sub-delegation in the West Bank.

We therefore urge all armed actors to take every possible measure to protect and respect civilians, their property and essential infrastructure. Any use of force must be done in accordance with international law rules and standards.

"Health care workers play a critical role to save lives. The staff and volunteers of the Palestine Red Crescent Society have been at the forefront of responding to urgent humanitarian needs. Ensuring that they are safe and able to carry out their jobs is crucial to guarantee the continuing care of affected communities," Mr Meffre added.

Only political steps aiming to resolve the conflict can halt the dangerous deterioration of the humanitarian situation across the occupied Palestinian territory, particularly in the West Bank.
