More than 3.3 km of Illaroo Road in Bangalee will undergo full rehabilitation works starting in May, with betterment works to be make the road more resilient to future nature disasters.
The road had been damaged by the severe flood events in 2022, with work being carried out thanks to joint funding by the Australian and NSW governments under Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements and the Infrastructure Betterment Fund.
Mayor Patricia White said they were ready to deliver the project now that geotechnical engineering investigations, design, scoping and funding was secured.
"The start of works will be welcome news to locals and motorists who use this busy stretch of road to travel between Nowra and the villages of Cambewarra, Tapitallee and beyond," Cr White said.
"We're anticipating that works will take around six months to complete, so we ask that people observe the temporary speed limit adjustments and drive to conditions," she said.
A temporary 60 km speed zone has been in place due to the condition of the road and will revert back to 80 km once works are complete.
Under the Infrastructure Betterment Fund, $4.5 million is being allocated towards the rehabilitation project which will be undertaken on the stretch of road between Karana Drive and Tapitallee Road. Works include:
- Tree removal to allow for more resilient pavement (offset planting will be done nearby).
- Adjustment of table drains that run parallel to the road.
- Replacement of the existing pipe culverts to allow stormwater to flow.
- Watermain and overhead power works.
- Gravel overlay and stabilised pavement with bitumen seal and more durable asphalt at intersections.
- Line marking.
Works are scheduled to begin from the week of Monday 19 May. Weather permitting, works will be completed before the end of the year. People can subscribe to the project page on Council's website for updates.
