IMF Staff Wraps Up Kenya Visit 5 March

Nairobi, Kenya: An International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff team, led by Ms. Haimanot Teferra, visited Nairobi during February 24–March 4, 2026 to exchange views with the Kenyan authorities on recent economic developments and the policy agenda and to further advance technical discussions in the context of the authorities' program request. The team met with Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Economic Planning John Mbadi Ng'ongo; Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya Kamau Thugge, and their respective teams. The IMF team also engaged with officials from other ministries and independent oversight bodies, and representatives from civil society organizations, financial sector, private businesses, and development partners.

At the conclusion of the visit, Ms. Teferra issued the following statement:

"The IMF staff team engaged with the authorities on recent macroeconomic and policy developments and key risks, including potential spillovers from developments in the Middle East. Discussions highlighted the need to strengthen fiscal discipline, enhance fiscal credibility, and build resilience to external shocks. These efforts should be supported by strengthened governance and greater public sector efficiency. Discussions with the authorities will continue during the upcoming IMF-World Bank Group Spring Meetings.

"The team thanks the authorities and other key stakeholders for their hospitality, candid engagement, and support during the visit."
