Inclusive Art Takes Spotlight At ACU Galleries

Australian Catholic University

Ageing Australians and budding artists with a lived experience of disability will be on display at two exhibitions opening at ACU's Strathfield and Melbourne Galleries this week.

ACU's Melbourne Gallery is supporting a debut photography exhibition commissioned by for-purposed aged and disability organisation VMCH.

The exhibition will feature eight stunning portraits of VMCH clients by Melbourne photographer Fi Douglass, paired alongside film photographs taken by the clients themselves.

Visual Arts Professor Catherine Bell said the gallery was proud to support VMCH in showcasing upcoming talented artists from the disability community.

"The exhibition fulfills our commitment to promoting emerging artists, connecting with the community, and amplifying underrepresented and marginalised voices," Professor Bell said.

"I am hopeful the exhibition will invite viewers to move beyond stereotypical narratives of disability and instead experience the nuanced, bold, and complex realities of life with disability."

The free exhibition will run at the ACU Melbourne Gallery in Fitzroy from Monday June 23 to Friday 4 July.

This week McGlade Gallery will also host I Made It! an initiative of Inner West Neighbor Aid to challenge the stigma around older people in the community. The project will showcase older people's skills, wisdom and experiences.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the McGlade Gallery and Inner West Neighbour Aid, who received Community Grant funding from Strathfield Council.

McGlade Gallery director Dr Tracey Clement said artistry and creativity knew no bounds.

"At the McGlade gallery we love nothing more than seeing the gallery full of people of all ages. Creativity knows no age limit and we can't wait to see our local seniors in the spotlight," Dr Clement said.

"The McGlade Gallery is a resource for the local community, a kind of arts hub in Sydney's inner west. We are so pleased to be able to support initiatives like Inner West Neighbour Aid."
