Increased WorkSafe premiums blow to Victorian business

The Australian Industry Group, the national employer association, has expressed concern at the increase in WorkSafe premiums announced today by the Victorian Government.

"The premiums are increasing at a time when virtually every other cost is increasing and causing Victorian businesses considerable headaches," the Victorian Head of Ai Group, Tim Piper, said today.

"Victorian businesses need a WorkSafe system that supports them and supports employees. But in recent times the costs to businesses have blown out, mainly as the result of increased mental health injury claims within the public service.

"We must keep claims and costs to a minimum. Government can help make that happen.

"It is important that claims are critically assessed to ensure they align with eligibility criteria, and that those areas experiencing the highest increase in mental health injury claims also pay a reasonable share of the added costs. The next crucial piece of information is the publication of the industry rates for 2023-24, which will give us a clearer picture of which industries will have the greatest increase."
