A Sydney based indigenous owned construction company is spearheading the current refurbishment of the Armidale Train Station.
The Bluewater Group is a majority indigenous owned and operated construction company that have secured the contract to paint and restore the historic train station on behalf of Transport for NSW.
Bluewater site project manager Michael Pearce said this was one of the first heritage projects he has worked on and one of the furthest regional projects from Sydney for the organisation.
"Restoring the heritage aspects of the train station, including a traditional paint scheme of the period, new galvanised roof and the re-establishment of roof dormer windows has been extremely rewarding," said Mr Pearce
"We have employed numerous local sub-contractors on the project and everyone is very proud of the work they are doing, taking particular care on the restoration of this much loved Armidale historic building. We are very excited for the community to see the finished product and hope to do an unveiling event soon."
Armidale Regional Council Mayor Ian Tiley said he was particularly thrilled to see an indigenous organisation complete the refurbishment.
"As we celebrate NAIDOC Week and the theme 'Heal Country' it is wonderful to see an aboriginal owned business thriving," said Cr Tiley
"NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Bluewater Group is a wonderful example of First Nations people stepping up in the construction industry and developing a positive influence and enhancing the lives of the greater indigenous community."
