Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne
Councillor Philippa Scott
Inner West Council has today launched our Building Our Community campaign, designed to engage the community in identifying local infrastructure priorities for the next 15 years.
As our population grows, it's vital that the Inner West continues to invest in the parks, playgrounds, transport links and community facilities that our community will need in the future.
That's why Inner West is establishing a new $500 million fund to continue to improve and upgrade community infrastructure.
This follows the recent adoption of the Our Fairer Future Plan, which aims to deliver between 20,000 and 30,000 new homes in the Inner West over 15 years. This new fund will make use of Council's existing infrastructure budget as well as the Development Contributions that will be achieved for the community through increased housing supply.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said Council will consult with the community to ensure this infrastructure funding reflects the needs of our growing area.
"Our new $500 million infrastructure fund will allow for the biggest investment in Inner West facilities ever undertaken," Mayor Byrne said.
"We want to include our whole community in planning for the infrastructure needs of local people over the long term.
"We are launching a large-scale community consultation campaign to make sure we hear from all sections of the Inner West about their priorities for improving community facilities.
"We will have teams out on the streets talking to thousands of locals about how we can make the Inner West an even better place to live.
"While we already have some of the best parks, playgrounds, pools and community spaces in Sydney, this new large-scale investment will improve the amenity and quality of life in our neighbourhoods even further."
Councillor Philippa Scott said we want to continue to deliver the facilities that make our growing community strong including libraries, parks, playgrounds, sports facilities, and spaces that bring people together.
"By creating the Building Our Community Plan, we will make sure the benefits that come from more people calling the Inner West home are shared fairly with more of the social infrastructure that makes this such a vibrant, connected, and liveable place."
Improvements to local infrastructure could include:
- Town centre upgrades
- Improved sporting grounds, pools and recreation facilities
- New cycleways
- Playgrounds and open spaces
- Pedestrian and road infrastructure including traffic calming systems and pedestrian areas
- New and upgraded community facilities
The consultation offers the community both online and in-person opportunities to share their views. A brand-new points allocator online tool and in-person coin system will encourage locals to think about how they believe types of projects should be prioritised.
Following this consultation campaign, the draft Building Our Community Plan will be exhibited for public feedback mid-2026.
