On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Australian Government reaffirms its support for the empowerment of people with disabilities.
In this context, I am pleased to announce $20 million over three years to support Save the Children in Iraq.
In places like Iraq, where more than 1.9 million people are displaced, those with a disability are often the most vulnerable.
This funding will help over 100,000 people, including 60,000 women and girls, and over 10,000 people with disabilities access water, sanitation, hygiene and maternal health services. It will also establish community centres that will provide space for Iraqis to meet, and a place where persons living with disabilities can access support and provide input into the decisions that affect their lives.
Australia is committed to working with the Iraqi Government and the international community to support persons with disabilities and assist communities to become more resilient and stable.
Globally, it is estimated that one in seven people have a disability.
People with disabilities and their families are disproportionately affected by poverty and more likely to be marginalised within their communities. By addressing the needs of people with disabilities, Australia can better reach the poorest and most marginalised.
This funding will be provided through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership
