International Firefighters' Day 2026

NT Government

This Monday marks International Firefighters' Day, an opportunity to recognise the dedication and service of firefighters across the Northern Territory and around the world.

Observed annually on 4 May, the day coincides with the feast day of St Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.

International Firefighters' Day is a time to honour and pay our respects to volunteer and career firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who have died while being an active service member. It is also an opportunity to recognise current and former firefighters for their extraordinary commitment, courage and service to the community.

Commemorative services will be held across the Territory:

NT Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner, Andrew Warton said International Firefighters' Day was an important opportunity to reflect on the service and sacrifice of firefighters across the Territory.

"International Firefighters' Day recognises the resilience, courage and commitment of firefighters here in the Territory and around the world."

"In recent months our people have moved from supporting communities through severe weather and flooding straight into preparations for bushfire season. It has been an incredibly demanding period, and I want to acknowledge the professionalism and dedication shown by our firefighters and staff across the agency."

"Our crews have stepped up wherever they have been needed - assisting with survey and rescue operations, supporting recovery efforts and continuing their frontline emergency response work to keep Territorians safe."

"On IFFD we pause to honour those who have lost their lives in the line of duty and those who have died while being an active service member.

"We thank every volunteer and career firefighter who continues to serve and protect our community," he said.

NT Fire and Rescue Service and Bushfires NT crews will also take part in the annual 'Sound Off', held on the first Sunday of May at 12pm. During the tribute, fire appliance sirens sound for 30 seconds before crews observe a minute's silence in memory of firefighters who have lost their lives in service.
