Invermay Rd reseal set to start this month

The City of Launceston will undertake a $2.9m upgrade of Invermay Road, between Forster St and Vermont Rd, starting in mid-February.

The project will see the resealing of a 2.1km section of Invermay Road, localised kerb and channel repair, new line marking and signage, and the replacement of traffic islands.

The upgrade is being undertaken as part of the City of Launceston's Accelerated Capital Works program; an initiative of the Council's nation-leading Community Care and Recovery Package.

While two-way traffic will be maintained throughout the works, reduced speed limits and traffic management will be in place. The project will include a combination of day-time, night-time and weekend works to minimise disruption to residents and businesses, and on-street parking will be maintained wherever possible.

The work will take around three months to complete, weather depending.

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said Invermay Road's road surface had reached the end of its useful life.

"Invermay Road is showing its age and this project represents an opportunity to upgrade it to contemporary standards," Mayor van Zetten said

"Like some other roads around Launceston, sections of Invermay Road are built over concrete slabs from the trolley bus era. This adds to the complexity of the project, as we need to ensure that the joins in the concrete do not reflect through the new asphalt seal.

"Because Invermay Road is a significant transport corridor, the works will result in delays for road users from time to time, but we will attempt to minimise these wherever possible.

"We hope all road users will obey any temporary speed limit changes that may be in place during the works, and we look forward to seeing the project complete later this year."
