Investigation Continues In 1988 St Kilda Rape

Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad are appealing for assistance as they continue to investigate a historical rape.

The investigation relates to the abduction and aggravated rape of a woman in St Kilda and Elwood on 23 January 1988.

Investigators have been told two male offenders abducted a 19-year-old woman when she was walking on Carlisle Street.

The woman was dragged into a waiting vehicle and driven to a carpark on Elwood Beach and raped by both men.

Police investigated the matter extensively at the time of the assault but were unable to identify the offender, however their DNA profiles were placed on a national database.

In 2021 there was a positive match with the DNA on the database and an offender was forensically linked to the rape.

Detectives travelled to Queensland and extradited the male.

Travis Rielly was charged and in 2025 he was sentenced to a term of imprisonment of 9 years and 9 months.

Sexual Crime Squad detectives have not stopped investigating the case and continue to seek the identity of the second man involved.

Today police are appealing for anyone with information on the identity of the second male, or information on the incident, to come forward to police.

A confidential report can be made to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Quotes attributable to Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Robinson:

"To be a 19-year-old woman, walking home after a night out with friends, then suddenly her world is changed in a horrific and unimaginable way".

"Whilst we are pleased we have been able to give her some answers and closure with a nearly ten-year prison sentence for of the males, it still looms over her every day that there is a second man still living his life, not being held to account for this heinous crime".

"We will not stop; we will not give up on this investigation until we have answers. Until this male is in custody and justice is served for the victim".
