The Homicide Squad investigation into a series of incidents, including a fatal police shooting, in the eastern suburbs overnight remains ongoing.
Police initially responded to an incident at Jolimont Railway Station about 11pm where a man approached PSOs.
After a short discussion, the man has then struck one of the male PSOs with a knife and causing injuries to his head and upper body.
It's believed the man then ran off through Yarra Park and investigators are attempting to establish whether he got onto a train at Richmond or a tram near Punt Road.
The PSO was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
About midnight police received reports two women had been stabbed following a confrontation with a man in Coppin Grove, Hawthorn.
One of the women, a 30-year-old from Hawthorn, died at the scene.
The second woman, also a 30-year-old Hawthorn woman, was conveyed to hospital with life threatening injuries.
She remains in a serious condition.
A significant police operation commenced in response to these incidents and members from the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) were in the area when police received a report of a man being stabbed in Kew about 12.15am.
The man, who is aged in his 50s, was located near Cotham Road and Queen Street and conveyed to hospital.
He subsequently passed away in hospital.
Shortly after, police from the CIRT located a male in his 30s on nearby Walton Street in Kew.
The man was armed with a knife and after a short confrontation, was fatally shot by police.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad are investigating the series of incidents, which are believed to be linked.
At this stage, police are not searching for anyone else in relation to the incidents and there is not believed to be any ongoing risk to community safety.
The investigation will also be oversighted by Professional Standards Command, as per protocol when any police firearm is discharged.
Investigators are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed any of these incidents and ask anyone with information to come forward.
Police will also conduct proactive patrols in the area today and in the coming days and urge anyone with concerns to approach police and speak to them.
