Investigation into Cheltenham collision

Police are investigating a collision which occurred in Cheltenham this afternoon.

The collision followed an alleged theft at a shopping centre on Nepean Highway.

Police were called to reports five young males had stolen items from a shop around 1pm.

Two onlookers chased the five males, who allegedly ran from the shopping centre alongside Nepean Highway, where four of them were arrested by attending police.

A short time later, a male matching the description of the fifth alleged offender was observed walking alongside Nepean Highway.

A police officer approached the male, who then ran across four lanes of traffic on Nepean Highway and was struck by a car around 1.40pm.

The male was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The female driver of the car immediately stopped at the scene and was not injured.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and investigations are ongoing.
