Investigations underway after fatal crash - Riverina

An emergency operation is continuing on the Alpine Way in the state's Riverina following a fatal crash this morning.

Emergency services were called to Scammels Gap Lookout, 20km north of Khancoban (170km south-east of Wagga Wagga), about 10.15am (Saturday 18 December 2021), after reports a SUV and multiple motorcycles had collided.

Officers from Riverina Police District arrived and found one motorcyclist – believed to be in his 50s - had died at the scene, with two others seriously injured.

The female driver of the SUV and the injured riders were air-lifted to Canberra Hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

The Alpine Way is closed and will be for some hours with Crash Investigation Unit officers en route to examine the scene.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area or delay their journey if possible. No alternate routes are available.
