Investing in Recreational Fishing to Create Jobs: First FAD Deployed

The Territory Labor Governments first trial Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) was deployed today as part of a plan to enhance and expand recreational fishing opportunities in the Territory.

The plan is part of the governments $50 million investment in recreational fishing to create jobs and enhance the Territorys reputation as a world-class fishing destination.

The FAD will be positioned off the coast of Dundee Beach. FADs attract small bait fish which then attract bigger fish right up the food chain, creating fishing hot spots for pelagic species.

Four more FADs are being developed and will be combined with artificial reefs as a tool to help boost recreational fishing opportunities, reduce pressure on at-risk reef species and support the long-term sustainability of key fishery resources.

The trial FADs will be monitored to provide feedback on design and deployment locations, and reports from fishos about their experience fishing the FADs is welcome.

Minister for Primary Industry and Resources, Ken Vowles:

We are investing $50 million in recreational fishing to grow the sector and create jobs for Territorians. The FAD program has been developed in full consultation with the Amateur Fishermens Association and the recreational fishing community.

Four more FADs are being developed and will be placed in locations that will provide easy access to pelagic species less susceptible to the effects of barotrauma and more suitable for catch and release.

The FADs have also been designed in a way that should deliver cost-effective maintenance and replacement.

Developing our recreational fishing opportunities through FADs and artificial reefs will support the growth of the industry and create exciting new sports fishing opportunities for recreational anglers.

AFANT CEO, David Ciaravolo:

Recreational fishers are excited about the deployment of this first FAD. FADs have real potential to provide new and exciting fishing opportunities to Top End fishers.

In other parts of Australia we have seen FADs become unique fishing hotspots.

AFANT and the fishing community look forward to the roll out of the NTs new fisheries enhancement program.
