IOM Speaks on Tragic Migrant Deaths Off Libya Coast

IOM

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is deeply saddened by reports that at least 18 migrants lost their lives in a shipwreck off the coast of Tobruk, Libya, over the weekend. Our thoughts are with their families and with the survivors. Fifty people are still missing, with ten survivors accounted for so far.

This latest tragedy is a stark reminder of the deadly risks people are forced to take in search of safety and opportunity. Libya remains a major transit point for migrants and refugees, many of whom face exploitation, abuse, and life-threatening journeys.

IOM teams in Libya are coordinating with local partners to provide support where possible. We reiterate our call for enhanced regional cooperation to expand access to safe, regular, and dignified migration pathways. We also stress the importance of intensifying efforts to combat trafficking in persons and migrant smuggling.
