Iranian Aussies Aid in State Terrorism Fight

Parliament of Australia

The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS) will hold a public hearing this Thursday for its review of the listing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a state sponsor of terrorism under the Criminal Code.

The IRGC is a hybrid military-security organisation that operates independently from Iran's conventional armed forces and reports directly to the Supreme Leader. It has a record of conducting internal security operations and hostile overseas activities. The Australian Government listed the IRGC as a state sponsor of terrorism in November 2025.

Chair of the PJCIS, Senator Raff Ciccone, said:

"Submitters to this review have shared concerning details about their experiences with the IRGC, both abroad and here in Australia. The Committee wants to ensure that the voices of Iranian Australians are heard in the review listing process, along with human rights organisations and academic experts."
