An Iranian national appeared before Parramatta Local Court today (9 August, 2025) charged with recklessly wounding a man at Villawood Immigration Detention Centre.
Police allege then man, 53, used an improvised weapon to wound a second man, 25, at the facility on 10 July, 2025.
The NSW Police Force started an investigation in July after the 25-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in the calf, thigh and wrist in his room at the facility.
Following initial inquiries and interviews, NSW Police passed the investigation to the AFP on 14 July.
The AFP arrested and searched the Iranian national yesterday (8 August, 2025) at the facility.
During the search, officers allegedly located a small pink bag with green dots, containing multiple clear plastic bags with white crystalline substances inside. Presumptive testing of the substances returned a positive result for methamphetamine and heroin.
The man was charged at Bankstown Police Station with:
* One count of reckless wounding, contrary to section 35(4) of the Crimes Act (1900). The maximum penalty for this offence is seven years' imprisonment; and
* Two counts of possess prohibited drug, namely methamphetamine and heroin, contrary to section 10(1) of the Drug Misuse and Trafficking Act 1985 (NSW), as applied by section 4 of the Commonwealth Places (Application of Laws) Act 1970 (Cth). The maximum penalty for this offence is five years' imprisonment.
The man was remanded in custody to appear before the same court on 13 August, 2025.
The alleged victim received medical treatment at the facility before being transported to Liverpool Hospital. He was discharged after receiving medical treatment for minor injuries.
