Irish national charged over roof scam

An Irish national will appear in court today after allegedly defrauding two women of about $900,000 in an alleged roofing scam across Sydney.

Police will allege the 39-year-old man posed as a tradesman, defrauding a 70-year-old woman of $276,300 after carrying out work in Stanmore between May 2019 and August 2019.

It will also be alleged that the man defrauded a 56-year-old woman of $623,180 after conducting unfinished work on the roof of her Kensington home between September 2019 and December 2019.

Following inquiries, police from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command issued an arrest warrant on Tuesday 19 May 2020 in relation to the Kensington incident

About midnight (Tuesday 26 May 2020), detectives from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command arrested the man after finding him in a car outside a hotel in Wolli Creek.

He was taken to Kogarah Police Station, where the warrant was executed for the offences of receive property stolen outside NSW, and dishonestly obtain property by deception; he was also charged with a second count of dishonestly obtained property by deception over the Stanmore incident.

The man has been refused bail to appear at Central Local Court today (Tuesday 26 May 2020).
