Good neighbours can often become good friends, and Wollongong City Council's Connecting Neighbours grant program is helping bring people together to make that happen.
It's created opportunities for friendships to grow including a Halloween Party to welcome new dads in Mount Saint Thomas, an Italian Nonnas Learning tour and even at a Letters for Seniors writing workshop.
The next round of the program is now open for applications, to support even more meaningful connections across Wollongong. Whether it's on your street or a place where you socialise, we're encouraging locals to meet and nurture strong relationships.

"The Connecting Neighbours Grant Program has helped many friendships bloom, thanks to the lovely ideas put forward by locals," Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.
"We've seen lots of little libraries, community gardens and BBQs as well as creative workshops and neighbourhood parties. They've all been unique to each group, creating a positive impact within their communities.
"Wollongong is stronger together, and we know how important it is to stay connected with one another. So, here is your sign to turn strangers into neighbours!"
For this round of applications, there is up to $250 for individual community members with a shared project idea, and up to $1,000 for projects with the backing of a support organisation.

"Keep the wonderful ideas coming, we'd love to hear it all," Cr Brown said.
"From Yallah to Helensburgh, Dapto to Figtree, I encourage everyone to have a go. Be the one to make the first move and submit your application before Monday 31 August.
"If you find the application process a bit intimidating, don't worry, Council is here to assist. Please reach out if you want to talk through your ideas, ask any questions or need assistance with applying."
Applications are open until Monday 31 August 2026.
