Pro-Palestine protesters planning to blockade Melbourne's King Street Bridge today have been warned by police that obstructing this major arterial route could impede emergency services and cause critical delays in responding to emergencies.
Today's demonstration will become the 92nd pro-Palestine rally since October 7, 2023.
These weekly protests have become a relentless campaign, repeatedly disrupting workers, businesses, commuters, and emergency services across Melbourne. More than 18,000 full police shifts have been diverted to manage these demonstrations.
Despite police warnings, Premier Jacinta Allan has refused to take strong action to prevent the dangerous disruption, ignoring repeated calls from police and community groups to reinstate move on powers.
Labor abolished these powers, which once enabled police to manage disruptive protests effectively. Today's planned bridge blockade is a clear example of why they must be restored.
Under the Liberals and Nationals' protest registration system, move on laws would be reinstated to ensure police have the tools they need to stop violence and keep the public safe.
Victoria remains the only state without a statewide protest registration or permit system, despite consistent calls from Victoria Police and business groups for one to be introduced.
Leader of the Opposition, Brad Battin said: "Every Victorian has the right to protest peacefully, but no one has the right to block bridges, shut down cities or stop our emergency services from attending emergencies."
"Premier Allan has let this go on for too long. Victorians are sick of the chaos. It's time to stop talking and start acting."
Shadow Minister for Police, David Southwick said: "Victorians have had a gutful of serial protestors hijacking our city with no consequences. Labor is once again failing to protect our community, our economy, and our emergency services."
Shadow Attorney-General, Michael O'Brien said: "Labor deliberately weakened move on laws to put the whims of violent activists ahead of the rights of Victorians to move around safely. A Liberal and Nationals government will restore strong move on powers and ensure that extremists will not triumph."
