Armed with shovels, smiles and a can-do spirit, Jandowae State School students joined forces with Western Downs Regional Council's Parks and Recreation team to give Lions Park in Jandowae 10 new native trees.

Eleven students from years nine and 10 who planted six Ficus Hillii trees and four Flame-leaf Bottle Trees as part of their Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystems studies.

Council Spokesperson for Tourism and Recreational Spaces Kaye Maguire said Council was thrilled to be providing practical learning and training opportunities for youth in the region.

"Council is tremendously proud of our parks and recreation areas, and this initiative is a fantastic example of how education and community pride can go hand in hand," Cr Maguire said.

"It's inspiring to see our young people getting involved in projects that enhance public spaces, while at the same time, contributing to their vocational learning and development.

"Over 50 years ago, Ficus Hillii trees were planted along Jandowae's main street and today these majestic trees stand more than 15 metres tall.

"To see this new generation of students eager to leave their own green legacy is something our entire region can be proud of.

"Council's parks and recreation team are always keen to share their knowledge with passionate young green thumbs, passing on the craft of arboriculture to the next generation.

"Students gained valuable knowledge about why the trees they were planting would thrive in the well-drained soils of Lions Park, where the full sun will help maintain the foliage year-round.

Cr Maquire said the newly planted trees will now undergo a consistent watering process to help establish the roots over the next 12 weeks.

"The planting project reflects Council's ongoing commitment to sustainable communities, environmental education and enhancing green spaces across the Western Downs," she said.
