JCU Proud To Continue Fuelling Townsville Fire

James Cook University and the Townsville Fire will continue their longstanding partnership, with JCU set to continue as foundation partner of the four-time Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) champions.

JCU is proud to have been the principal partner of the Townsville Fire since the 2013/14 WNBL season and the University is delighted to renew this support for the next two seasons.

After a narrow loss in last year's championship series, proud Townsville Fire board member and JCU Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Biggs said he was excited to continue this crucial connection between two icons of North Queensland, as the club strives for a fifth championship.

"JCU's partnership has now spanned more than a decade and as the Fire celebrates 25 years of inspiring North Queenslanders, JCU continues to stand alongside the team in championing excellence, resilience and community spirit both on and off the court," he said.

"The Townsville Fire continue to be wonderful ambassadors for the city and the region, and the University is thrilled to continue its support of their program.

"We are proud to support women's sport in our region, and we know all the players, coaches and staff will represent the JCU logo on their uniforms with distinction as they battle to win one of the top basketball leagues in the world."

The sponsorship agreement also contributes in-kind support for the provision of tuition fees or cash scholarships for Fire players and staff who are studying at JCU.

It also provides opportunities to JCU students for internships, clinical placements and research while working in a professional sporting environment.

Townsville Fire General Manager Sam Pascoe says the club are thrilled about the expansion of their long and successful partnership with JCU.

"JCU continued support of the Fire has been curial to our team's success both on and off the court," she said.

"This has proven to be a very valuable partnership for our club and we are looking forward to what we can achieve in the next two years on the back of JCU's support.

"Not only does this partnership assist the Fire in chasing another championship to bring back to North Queensland, but it also allows to help provide a holistic approach to how we look after our players, with opportunities for scholarships and support at this fantastic institution."

JCU will also serve as the official Legacy Partner of the Townsville Fire's 25th Anniversary season – a celebration of female leadership, regional pride, and the evolution of women's basketball in North Queensland.

The Townsville Fire tip-off their 2024/25 WNBL campaign on the road this Sunday with a grand final rematch against fierce rivals the Bendigo Spirit at Red Energy Arena.
