Rockhampton Regional Council will produce the popular Broadway hit Jersey Boys as its musical in 2022, Communities and Heritage portfolio spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson has announced.

With chart-topping music, memorable characters and great storytelling, Jersey Boys follows the evolution of four kids who became one of the greatest successes in pop music history, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

It has been a massive hit on Broadway, West end and throughout the world.

"People have been asking virtually since the curtain fell on Mamma Mia! Earlier this year which musical Council is going to produce in 2022 and I am very pleased to be able to make this announcement," Cr Wickerson said.

"Jersey Boys is a very popular musical full of hit songs and I am sure it is going to be a great show and a great showcase of our local performers when the curtain opens in March next year.

"If you like music from the 1960s such as Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, and Can't Take My Eyes Off You, then you're going to love this show."

"A musical such as Jersey Boys is a big undertaking but Rockhampton Regional Council is pleased to produce these local musical productions not only to give our talented local performers the opportunity to perform but also for local audiences to experience the talent we have locally," he said.

Joy Philippi, who directed Mamma Mia! and has been involved in Rockhampton Regional Council musicals for many years, will direct the show.

The Tony and Grammy Award winning show premiered on Broadway in 2004 and ran for 12 years. It has also been performed internationally.
