The South-West's tourism industry is positioned for take-off, with Jetstar to operate direct flights from Melbourne to Busselton from next year.
The first commercial direct route linking the East coast of Australia with the internationally-renowned Margaret River region was announced today by the McGowan Government, Jetstar and the City of Busselton.
In a game-changer for the South-West, visitors will be able to fly directly into the region from March 25, 2020, opening up an exciting new era of opportunity for the region.
The air service is expected to be a catalyst for further investment, providing an economic boost to the South-West.
Services will run three times a week - year-round during daylight hours - between Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine and Busselton Margaret River Airport, bringing thousands of visitors into the region each year.
Visitors will be able to fly on an Airbus A320 and enjoy the kaleidoscope of high-quality experiences that have contributed to the South-West being one of Western Australia's premier regional tourist destinations.
The State Government has spent $43.25 million towards the development of the airport and airline attraction, and will invest a further to $3.265 million to upgrade terminal infrastructure to allow Jetstar's air service to commence in March 2020.
The McGowan Government, through the South West Development Commission and Tourism WA, has worked closely with the City of Busselton to take the project from the business case stage to development to securing an airline service.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"Having a direct route trial into the South-West from the Eastern States could be a game-changer that will benefit the entire region, opening up new markets and providing a platform for new business development and jobs creation.
"The State Government's significant investment in airport infrastructure has opened up this opportunity for the State and the South-West.
"We know the Margaret River wine region has an international reputation that can be built on for the entire region.
"Visitors will enjoy extraordinary experiences: visiting Busselton Jetty's underwater observatory, exploring the great outdoors through activities like swimming with wild dolphins, hiking and mountain biking through breathtaking wilderness areas, sampling locally-produced food and wine, and attending internationally-renowned events.
"Congratulations to all involved in bringing this dream to reality, particularly the City of Busselton, the South West Development Commission, Jetstar and the Qantas Group for persisting with the vision of an interstate service into the newly developed Busselton Margaret River Airport."

"Whether it's taking a selfie at Busselton Jetty or unwinding at a winery in Margaret River, visitors can make the most of their holiday time, whether it's a long weekend getaway or a longer stay to explore more of our State.
"Tourism WA also supports many events in the region throughout the year including the Margaret River Pro, WA Gourmet Escape and the Ironman Western Australia, so there is plenty for visitors to see and do.
"Margaret River and Southern Western Australia also recently took out the number one destination honours on Lonely Planet's 'Best in Asia Pacific 2019' list, which shows what a hit this region is with visitors."
