Jobs continue to rebound according to ABS

Peter Gutwein,Premier

Today's ABS payroll jobs data has again confirmed that Tasmanian jobs are returning and our economy is rebounding as we implement our plan to Secure Tasmania's future.

The data shows that Tasmanian payroll jobs grew 0.5 per cent in the fortnight to 19 June, nearly double national growth, and the highest growth rate of the states. Over the same period, total wages paid grew 1.6 per cent, which was the highest growth rate in the country.

Payroll jobs are now 2.6 per cent higher than before the pandemic, and importantly, jobs are higher for both men and women, and for all age cohorts, demonstrating our recovery is broad-based.

Following yesterday's positive retail trade and building approval data, today's jobs figures show the recovery in our hospitality sector is the third best in the nation, and construction jobs are now six per cent higher than before the pandemic, reflecting the strength seen in our building and construction sector as a result of our Construction Blitz and HomeBuilder packages.

With 25,000 jobs created since we came to Government, our economic recovery continues to strengthen. But we know that there is more to do, and we will continue to work hard to deliver on our plan to secure Tasmania's future.
