Jobs data finally showing signs of improvement

Tasmanian Labor
  • Labor welcomes rare bright spot in jobs data
  • More work to do
  • Underemployment still worst in the nation
  • Shadow Treasurer David O'Byrne today welcomed a long overdue improvement in ABS jobs data.

"It's nice that after a year of job losses and deterioration in the participation rate, we have some good news," Mr O'Byrne said.

"Labor always welcomes more jobs for Tasmanians but this is no time for complacency.

"The jobless rate is among the worst in the nation and 3,500 full time jobs have been lost since the election,.

"Will Hodgman promised before the last election to deliver the lowest jobless rate in the country, so it's important that the Government finally rolls up its sleeves and gets to work.

"The Liberals must also act to turn around our underemployment rate, that is people who can't get the hours they need, which is comfortably the worst in the nation.

"We call on the Government to make most of job-creating opportunities at Burnie Port and in hydrogen generation, where the Liberals have so far failed to act.

"Will Hodgman should also back Labor's plan for free TAFE courses in industries with skills gaps, to put Tasmania back on the right path to grow future jobs."

    David O'Byrne MP

    Shadow Treasurer
