Johnston Street Crossing to Boost Access, Safety

Council advises that construction works are set to start next week on the installation of a raised pedestrian crossing, also known as a Wombat crossing, near the entrance to Wagga Beach: Riverside precinct in Johnston Street.

The works are scheduled to start on Monday 15 September and are expected to finish on Friday 26 September 2025, weather permitting.

The existing zebra crossing at the intersection of Johnston Street and Church Street will be replaced with the raised 'Wombat' crossing, while a new section of shared path, along with kerb and guttering will be installed on the approaches.

Council's Manager Civil Operations Krishan Maharaj said the design will deliver several benefits for people accessing the Riverside precinct, along with walkers, runners and cyclists using the Active Travel shared path.

"This upgrade is being undertaken to improve safety and enhance accessibility for the community, and all road users in the area," Mr Maharaj said.

"These crossings are designed to be at the same level as the footpath, which makes them more accessible for people of all abilities or pushing prams and such.

"The Wombat crossing is also designed to calm traffic approaching or leaving the Wagga Beach entrance road, or coming around the corner out of Church Street, slowing vehicles and giving drivers more visibility of those using the crossing.

"We will also be installing safety bollards on either side of the new crossing so that vehicles are restricted to the road's two designated traffic lanes."

The upgraded crossing will include a dedicated pedestrian crossing lane and a separate two-lane cycle path which will connect to existing Active Travel Plan shared path.

The footpath construction and kerb and guttering works will take place during the daytime between 7am and 5pm and are expected to start on Monday 15 September.

The asphalt works for construction of the new crossing will be carried as night works, taking place between 5pm and 5am, which will commence once the concreted works are completed.

The road will be closed at the Johnston Street / Church Street intersection during the night works, with no vehicle access to the Wagga Beach carpark or Riverside precinct.

"There will be impacts on pedestrian and vehicle movement during the daytime works, with traffic control in place and detours for pedestrians," Mr Maharaj said.

"We apologise for any inconvenience and thank residents and road users for their patience and understanding during these essential improvements."
