Port Macquarie Hastings Council is inviting the community to roll up their sleeves and join the fun at the upcoming Repair Fair on Sunday 16 November, a hands-on event celebrating repair, reuse and waste reduction.
The Repair Fair will bring together local repair specialists, artisans, community groups and businesses to showcase practical skills that help extend the life of everyday items - reducing waste and supporting a stronger circular economy.
The event builds on Council's Repair Directory, launched in 2023, which connects residents with local businesses skilled in repairing clothing, jewellery, furniture, bikes, household items and more. The Fair brings the directory to life by allowing people to meet the experts face-to-face, learn new skills, and see repairs in action.
The day will include free workshops, demonstrations, live music, food vendors, children's craft activities, a spin-to-win prize wheel and more. Workshops will cover slow stitching, hand-sewn basket weaving, leather bookmark making and simple clothing mending techniques. There'll also be ongoing demonstrations in bike and skateboard repair, watch repair and leather care.
To complement the fair, Council will also be hosting a Car Boot Sale next door at the Port Macquarie Library precinct as part of the Garage Sale Trail - the perfect chance to score pre-loved treasures and keep good items in circulation.
Corrine De Mestre, Council's Waste and Resource Recovery Projects Officer, said the event highlights how small actions can make a big difference.
"Repairing things we already own helps reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, saves money, and keeps valuable resources in use for longer. The Repair Fair is about showcasing the skills and services we have right here in our local community - and empowering people to give repair a go."
Dette Gammon, Council's Education Coordinator, said the event is designed to be creative, practical and fun.
"We want families, young people, makers and tinkerers to come along, get hands-on and be inspired. The workshops and demonstrations are welcoming and accessible, whether you're a beginner or already love fixing things. It's a chance to learn from talented locals and see how repair and reuse can be part of everyday life."
The Repair Fair will take place on Sunday 16 November, from 10am to 1pm at the Port Macquarie Library. Entry is free. Some workshops require pre-booking, while others will run throughout the day for anyone to join in. The community is encouraged to come along, explore the stalls, chat with local repair experts, and enjoy a relaxed, creative day that celebrates giving things a second life.
