Lake Macquarie City Council has adopted an updated policy to guide the management of contaminated or potentially contaminated land across the city, helping protect the community and environment while supporting appropriate future development.

The Managing Contaminated or Potentially Contaminated Land in Lake Macquarie City Policy provides a framework for how Council considers contamination risks during planning, rezoning and development assessment processes, and how information about contaminated land is recorded and shared.

Deputy Mayor Colin Grigg said the policy played an important role in ensuring growth occurred in a way that was informed, transparent and responsible.

"As our city evolves, it's important that we have strong processes in place to understand and manage potential risks associated with historic land uses," Cr Grigg said.

"This policy helps ensure contamination issues are identified and considered early, protecting people and the environment while providing greater certainty for property owners, developers and the wider community."

Deputy Mayor Grigg said the updated policy also supported public access to information and clear decision-making.

"Whether someone is buying land, planning a development or simply wanting to understand more about a site, this policy helps provide a clear framework for how information is managed and shared," he said.

The update follows a routine review and retains the policy's existing intent while simplifying language, improving readability and updating references to current legislation, government agencies and regulatory requirements.

At the meeting, Council also approved a development application for a dwelling house, secondary dwelling, shed and swimming pool at Coal Point, subject to conditions.

Councillors also considered a development application for a residential flat building at Warners Bay. After considering the assessment against relevant planning controls and strategic planning objectives, Council resolved to approve the application, subject to conditions.

The recommendations at tonight's meeting align with Council's long‑term planning, which is shaped by the community's priorities for caring for the natural environment and a diverse and thriving economy.
