Kempsey Council Unites to Tackle Social Issues

Kempsey Shire Council

Kempsey Shire Council is developing a coordinated approach to address complex social issues in Kempsey, including homelessness, community safety, and the management of public spaces.

In response to ongoing reports from staff, local businesses, and community members about safety risks and unsanitary conditions in some areas, Council has begun internal discussions and is seeking engagement with relevant stakeholders to identify how it can better coordinate its response within existing roles and responsibilities.

As part of this work, Council is exploring the establishment of a multi-agency round table to bring together key state government departments, police, and local service providers with the aim of fostering more effective collaboration and information sharing. Planning for this initiative is in the early stages, with agencies to be invited to participate once a draft framework is prepared.

While Council does not have legal authority to forcibly move people from public land, it remains focused on identifying long-term, coordinated solutions that address the problem of homelessness in our Shire. Council continues to operate within NSW Government protocols that emphasise compassionate engagement and connection to appropriate support services.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Meddle said Council aims to provide local leadership by bringing together agencies to work towards common goals.

"This is a complex issue that affects the whole community and requires a coordinated response," Mr Meddle said. "Council is committed to working with our partners to keep public spaces safe while ensuring people experiencing homelessness are treated with dignity and compassion. While homelessness is ultimately a state government responsibility, we recognise the importance of providing local leadership to support our most vulnerable community members."

Council will continue to keep the community informed as planning progresses.
