Locals from across the Western Downs region are invited to explore exciting career opportunities through Council's acclaimed 'Kickstart Your Career' program, with applications now open for 2026.

This initiative continues to play a vital role in building a skilled regional workforce, having supported 150 trainees and apprentices since 2018.

Demonstrating Council's ongoing commitment to workforce development, the program equips participants with practical skills and experience that pave the way for long-term career success in the region.

Councillor George Moore, Council Spokesperson for Corporate Governance and Finance said the program offers a valuable pathway for residents to gain hands-on experience while contributing to their community.

"Kickstart Your Career is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to combine formal study with real-world learning, often leading to fulfilling careers right here in the Western Downs," Cr Moore said.

"Council recognises the importance of investing in local talent to ensure a strong and sustainable workforce for the future. Our flexible and responsive business model allows us to offer a wide range of career opportunities across the region."

The 2026 intake includes roles in parks and recreation, information communication and technology, rural services, civil construction, diesel fitting, boiler-making, and water operations. The program also supports inclusive opportunities for people with disabilities, ensuring everyone has a chance to upskill.

For Gerhard Mortimer, an Administration Officer at Western Downs Regional Council the 'Kickstart Program' was an opportunity to change careers and gain a foot in the door after graduation.

"I've gained the confidence and practical skills needed to pivot my career and move forward with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility," he said.

While final year Diesel Fitter Mechanical Apprentice, Thomas Forsythe found the 'Kickstart Program' invaluable for career progression and skill-based learning.

"Completing a mechanical apprenticeship with Council gave me the opportunity to work on a wide range of vehicles and the hands-on experience needed to advance my career," he said.

Applications for the 2026 'Kickstart Your Career' traineeships and apprenticeships are now open and will close on Friday 15 August 2025. The successful applicants are set to begin in February 2026.
