Kingston's new Aquatic Facility Plan moves forward

Kingston's new aquatics and leisure centre is one step closer, with Council adopting the Aquatic Facility Plan to help guide the project.

Under the Aquatic Facility Plan, a new 'district level' aquatic and leisure centre will be delivered in Kingston with expanded facilities to meet community needs for activities such as warm water exercise and improved learn to swim programming.

The community was consulted through the development of the Plan, including a six-week consultation process in 2020 with surveys and webinars. The Aquatic Facility Plan is based on the best evidence available, and the strong desire of Council to deliver a best practice Aquatic Centre that will stand the test of time, delivering wonderful facilities for the community for many years to come, and represent value for ratepayers' dollars.

The Plan outlines a 'two-facility model' that incorporates Waves Leisure Centre as the regional level facility in the north of Kingston and the proposed new centre as the district level facility to be located in the central/south.

Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said the plan was an exciting step forward and showed Council's commitment to significantly invest in a new centre to meet community needs for future generations.

"Aquatic facilities are extremely valuable for the community boosting the health and wellbeing of all ages, and also providing essential water safety education and a social gathering place for families and friends to come together," said Cr Staikos.

"This is a major investment for our community and requires rigorous planning to make sure it's delivered well. Council is currently conducting initial investigations of a number of potential sites for the new centre."
