For Nilakshi Perera and her teammates, cricket became the unexpected path to connection, confidence and community.
With Council support, Knox City Cricket Club launched its first women's team in over 50 years - and in their debut season, they won the premiership. But for club secretary Nilakshi Perera, the real victory wasn't the trophy - it was the transformation she saw in the women who joined.
"Aside from our captain and one other player, none of us had played cricket before," she says. "We truly appreciate not just playing cricket but also the friendships we've formed."
The team quickly became a space where women could build confidence, try something new, and support each other - regardless of experience. "It's about women empowering women, lifting each other and creating a supportive space where we inspire more women to step forward, give it a go and be part of something bigger," Nilakshi says.
Ass the team started from scratch, they've made it a priority to welcome beginners. "Anyone new to the game is more than welcome to join us. We understand exactly what it's like to be a beginner and are here to support them every step of the way."
While their on-field success was impressive, Nilakshi says the strongest outcome was the sense of belonging. "Our bond is more important than the premiership - that is the best thing we got out of it."
