Kyogle Volunteer Wins NSW SES Young Volunteer Award

NSW SES

A member of the NSW SES Kyogle Unit for four years, Cameron has built a reputation as a dependable, highly skilled volunteer who steps up when it matters most.

From storm operations to vertical rescue, road crash rescue and on-water response, Cameron has quickly developed a broad skillset, with plans to take on further specialist training.

But it's not just his operational capability that stands out.

As a qualified Small Engine Mechanic, Cameron plays a key role behind the scenes at the NSW SES Kyogle Unit, maintaining chainsaws and ensuring critical equipment is safe and ready to go.

He's also volunteered during some of NSW's largest natural disasters, including the devastating 2022 floods, and more recently during Tropical Cyclone Alfred, where he stepped into a Team Leader role.

NSW SES Kyogle Unit Commander, Deb Castledine, praised Cameron for his contribution to his community and said this recognition comes as no surprise.

"Cameron represents everything you want in an SES volunteer. He's skilled, calm under pressure and always willing to step up."

"Despite his age, he's already a trusted leader within the Kyogle Unit and someone others look to in challenging situations," she said.

Earlier this year, Cameron was appointed Senior Group Officer, where he now helps lead and coordinate other members, ensuring crews remain trained, capable and ready to respond.

Reflecting on the award, Cameron said he was honoured to receive the recognition.

"I'm extremely flattered and excited to be recognised as the NSW SES Young Volunteer of the Year,"

"Volunteering with the NSW SES Kyogle Unit has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and this award means a lot to me. I'm proud to serve alongside such dedicated people and to support our community when it needs us most," Cameron said.

Cameron was also a finalist for the award in 2025, making this year's win a strong reflection of his continued commitment and growth within the NSW SES.
