Labor welcomes State Final Demand result

Tasmanian Labor

Tasmanian Labor welcomes today's State Final Demand result, with a 3.3% increase for the quarter.

Shadow Treasurer David O'Byrne said this was a good result in line with the improvement in the national economy.

"The State Final Demand result for this quarter is welcome, but the Government cannot be complacent," Mr O'Byrne said.

"As history tells us that the Tasmanian economy does respond quickly to stimulus and equally struggles once the stimulus is removed.

"With JobKeeper winding back and a failure to deliver key infrastructure projects the Government must not sit on its hands.

"Tasmania's jobs recovery is behind all of the states except for Victoria, unemployment rates outside Hobart are among the worst in the country and Tasmanian wages are $12,000 below the national average.

"This result is good for Tasmania, but the continued impact of COVID-19 cannot be underestimated."
