Labor's latest gaffe proves they cannot be trusted with TasTAFE

Felix Ellis, Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth

The Rockliff Liberal Government is getting things done to build a strong economy, including through our $114 million plan to build a better TasTAFE.

Labor's embarrassing gaffe today simply highlights their complete inability to do any research in their haste to create silly gotcha moments.

The TasTAFE (Skills and Training Business) Act 2021 clearly states in Section 47:

"(2) As soon as practicable after the 6-month anniversary of the commencement of section 4 , the Minister is to cause a review into the implementation of this Act and its impact on the operation of TasTAFE."

With this month marking six months since the Act's commencement, the review is already underway and will be tabled once it is complete.

In line with the legislation, further independent reviews will be carried out after 30 months and six years, by two or more people who hold the appropriate qualifications and skills.

Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth, Felix Ellis, said Labor have been exposed as either incompetent or lazy.

"Labor have no plan for Tasmania's future and do nothing except oppose and complain, but the least they could do is actually understand the legislation they're playing political games with," Minister Ellis said.

"This is very basic stuff and Labor have been completely exposed.

"Their record on TasTAFE is abysmal and this latest gaffe is more evidence they simply cannot be trusted to secure its future.

"By contrast, our Government has reformed TasTAFE to help ensure it can meet the workforce demands of the future – reforms which were, of course, opposed by Labor.

"The question now for Labor is are they crabwalking away from their opposition to our reforms, just like they did with year 11 and 12 extensions?

"We are investing in TasTAFE's future and providing more teachers, new and improved training facilities, and better access to training for regional and rural Tasmanians."
