Labor's Weaker Lobbying Reforms Come Five Years Too Late

Australian Greens

Today the NSW Labor Government announced watered down reforms that will mean in-house lobbyists still won't be required to disclose meetings with Ministers and will do nothing to close the revolving door between government and harmful industries like big tech, gambling and fossil fuels.

Kobi Shetty, MP for Balmain and Greens NSW Spokesperson for Anti-Corruption said:

"Five years too late and even weaker than what was proposed by the Liberals. That's the topline for Labor's disappointing 'lobbying' reforms announced today.

"These reforms won't shut the revolving door between government and gambling, mining and big tech industries.

"And it will mean that many lobbyists won't even need to disclose they've met with Ministers or senior government officials.

"It's good to see this small step in the right direction, but what is proposed is significantly weaker than the Bill I tabled in Parliament just weeks ago.

"ICAC made 29 recommendations five years ago to restore trust in democracy in NSW. My Bill addresses each and every one to make sure that politicians are working for the community, and not for their mates at the top end of town.

"If Labor is serious about stamping out corruption than they need to do much better than this.
