A forum delving into the far-reaching effects of domestic violence is set to take place in Lake Macquarie this Wednesday 23 November.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the Zonta Forum would kickstart the global campaign of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, which launches on November 25.
"Sadly, domestic violence is an ongoing issue that exists around the globe, and the Hunter Region is not immune," Cr Fraser said.
"It's important we continue to do all we can to open up the conversation so we can boost awareness and share knowledge that can help those in need and create lasting change."
The global theme for this year's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence is 'UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls'.
Three women will share their experience and knowledge regarding domestic violence at the Hunter forum.
Sharon Wilkinson, who has more than 30 years of experience working in areas of child abuse, sexual assault, domestic and family abuse investigation and family dispute resolution, will discuss her learnings over time.
While Robin Armstrong, a registered nurse of 40 years, will showcase her research, which focuses on the impacts of socioeconomic backgrounds and the associated long-term health impacts.
The final speaker, local Paiige Williams, has worked in the community service sector for more than 15 years, dedicating most of her career to the Samaritans Foundation.
Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle co-founder Jill Maclachlan said the forum aimed to inform, educate and seek solutions at a community and government level.
"Our members are strongly committed to working together to build a better world for women and girls," Mrs Maclachlan said.
"Our campaign against domestic violence demonstrates Zonta's continued commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of women."
The forum, which is held at Brownsugar restaurant at Warners Bay, runs from 6-9pm. A question and answer session will be held toward the end of the evening.
The event is run in partnership with Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle.
