Griffith City Council's $17.5 million Lake Wyangan Residential Housing Enabling Infrastructure Development is nearing completion, with private developers now commencing work and new residential lots expected to become available in the coming months.
The major infrastructure project was designed to unlock land for residential development and support around 500 additional homes in the Lake Wyangan area.
With the Council-funded works now nearing completion, private development is beginning to follow, marking an important step in turning the significant infrastructure investment into new housing opportunities for Griffith.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran, said it was exciting to see the project moving into its next phase.
"The purpose of this significant investment was to unlock land and enable new housing in Lake Wyangan, so seeing private developers now commencing work is great news for Griffith," Councillor Curran said.
"This is a major project for our community and we are now seeing the infrastructure Council has delivered begin to support the next stage of development.
"Additional housing lots becoming available will provide more opportunities for people looking to build a home in Griffith and support continued growth in our city."
The project was funded through an Australian Government Housing Support Program grant, with the remainder contributed through the Lake Wyangan Development Contribution Plan.
Council's works have included several kilometres of stormwater drainage and associated earthworks, a new stormwater outfall pump, the realignment of Abattoir and Mallinson Roads and new intersections at Boorga Road and Mallinson Road.
The project has also included construction of a detention basin on Smeeth Road and the upgrade of a major stormwater culvert.
With private development now underway, further residential construction is expected to progress as the enabling infrastructure project reaches completion.
"This is exactly the kind of outcome we want to see from strategic infrastructure investment, creating the foundations for private development and helping to grow our housing supply," Councillor Curran said.
"It is a positive next step for Lake Wyangan and for the future growth of Griffith."
