Land Transfer Spurs New Community Spaces in Hedland

  • Former South Hedland TAFE campus site set for new lease of life as a community, sports and recreation hub
  • The disused State-owned site has been divested to the Town of Port Hedland
  • The land divestment program is unlocking surplus and underutilised Crown land across Western Australia
  • Cook Government committed to fostering vibrant and creative communities

The Cook Government has divested the site of the former South Hedland campus of North Regional TAFE to the Town of Port Hedland - enabling its redevelopment into a modern civic and community precinct.

The former campus site is set to be transformed into an arts and cultural centre and library, including civic and commercial spaces.

The proposed redevelopment aims to revitalise the local area and support longer term aspirations for South Hedland as a commercial, community and civic centre.

Part of the site is already earmarked for the development of a regional-level integrated sports precinct and car park.

The Cook Government has been working closely with the Town to determine the optimal use of the site since TAFE training operations were transferred to Pundulmurra.

Through the State Government's Rebuilding Our TAFEs plan, the expanded Pundulmurra campus received a $44.3 million investment and now offers state-of-the-art facilities for students in the region.

Future redevelopment of the site - which was rezoned in 2024 to enable 'mixed use' development - will be subject to the usual planning and building approvals.

Comments attributed to Planning and Lands Minister John Carey:

"Our government is continuing to unlock underutilised government owned assets to support the delivery of much-needed community infrastructure.

"Through our land divestment program, we are identifying and optimising surplus Crown land for the benefit of communities right across the State."

Comments attributed to Skills and TAFE Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

"North Regional TAFE's Pundulmurra campus is now fully operational and delivering world-class fee free and low fee training; helping locals to get the skills they need to take up the jobs available in our diversifying economy.

"It's fantastic to see that the site of the former campus will now be repurposed to serve the Port Hedland community for generations to come."

Comments attributed to Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

"I am pleased to see plans to reactivate the former campus site progress with this transfer of State land to the Town of Port Hedland.

"The proposed new community and civic hub will bring greater amenity, vibrancy and economic benefits for the people of Hedland.

"The land transfer from State to local government demonstrates how, working together, we can achieve great outcomes for our community."
