Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is inviting the community and other stakeholders to have their say on a plan to construct two new leachate ponds at Melbourne Regional Landfill at Ravenhall.
The operator of the landfill has applied for an EPA Works Approval to construct ponds designed to manage the leachate, which is the waste water created by waste degradation and the soaking of rainwater through waste in the existing landfill.
The proposed ponds would have a combined capacity of 20 megalitres, increasing the site's total leachate storage capacity to 48 megalitres, and be part of the system that stores, treats and safely disposes of the leachate.
Submissions from the public will be accepted until 14 April 2021, and EPA has published the company's Works Approval application and other documents on the Engage Vic website, at https://engage.vic.gov.au/epa-works-approvals/landfill-operations-proposed-leachate-ponds
EPA Works Approvals are required under the Environment Protection Act 1970 for industrial and waste management activities that have the potential for significant environmental impact. Where a Works Approval is granted, it includes specific environmental conditions the company must meet for the project to go ahead.
