Today Rockhampton's much loved CBD has expanded its offerings in more ways than one by filling in a missing link with the opening of a new pedestrian walkway.

The linkage in the heart of the CBD, between East Street and the Rockhampton Museum of Art (RMOA), will literally 'open up' the area.

Mayor Tony Williams said the new pedestrian walkway, connecting East Street and Quay Lane, will bring a new dimension to the heart of Rockhampton.

"By connecting the CBD to the new RMOA and our beautiful riverbank (Tunuba), we will see a natural movement of people from East Street to Quay Street and vice versa," Mayor Williams said.

"While some beautification works are still underway, it's wonderful to see this space opened and a direct link provided to our brand new art gallery.

"Rockhampton's CBD really is a fantastic part of our city with so much to offer and I'm beyond pleased to see the linkage open up which will help people fully experience all that this area has to offer.

Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said not only will the new walkway mean better access for the community and tourists alike, it will also be a win for local businesses.

"With people visiting RMOA and spending money in the area, our local businesses will be able to benefit from this increase in activity thanks to the new linkage so it really is the perfect timing to open this up," Cr Wickerson said.

"We know that businesses in the CBD are really looking forward to the activity that this walkway will bring to the city and I hope the community is just as excited about it.

"The Rockhampton CBD has always been a vital thread in the tapestry of our city so I'm really looking forward to the new dynamic that this link is going to provide our community.

"In the future we are even looking at holding small outdoor events such as markets in the space which will add to the already great offerings in the CBD."
