Drivers in Bunbury and the South West should be aware: safety cameras targeting seatbelt, mobile phone and speeding offences are now enforcing locally.
Two new safety camera trailers, now based in Bunbury full-time, have joined the State's fleet of eight safety camera trailers operating across the Perth metropolitan area, Mid West and the Great Southern.
The safety camera trailers can be deployed anywhere, anytime, and will be deployed to various locations around the South West.
Safety cameras have already proven to change driver behaviour in Western Australia's regional areas.
Great Southern based safety cameras saw an 82 per cent reduction in the overall rate of offending between June 2025 and July 2026. Key areas include:
- 85 per cent reduction in the rate of mobile phone offences;
- 72 per cent reduction in the rate of seatbelt offences; and
- 83 per cent reduction in the rate of speeding offences.
Mid West based safety cameras saw a 72 per cent reduction between July 2025 and July 2026. Key areas include:
- 84 per cent reduction in the rate of mobile phone offences;
- 66 per cent reduction in the rate of seatbelt offences; and
- 68 per cent reduction in speeding.
One year after the introduction of safety cameras, together with dedicated education and awareness campaigns, seatbelt related motor vehicle fatalities dropped from a 10-year average of 23 per cent to 13.8 per cent across the State.
The safety camera trailers were funded as part of the $80 million Road Safety Reform Package announced in December 2025.
The Road Safety Reform Package is funded through the Road Safety Commission's Road Trauma Trust Account, which sees 100 per cent of safety camera fines allocated to projects and programs to save lives on WA roads.

"Over the past five years, 32 people died in road crashes on average in the South West region.
"Along with targeted education and awareness campaigns, community engagement and infrastructure improvements, safety cameras form part of the State's long-term strategy to change driver behaviour and improve road safety outcomes.
"Every seatbelt not worn or worn incorrectly, every mobile phone used behind the wheel and every kilometre over the speed limit creates an unnecessary risk and puts lives in danger.
"A little risk-taking is never okay - receiving a fine pales in comparison to the devastating impact on a community when a life is lost."
