Latrobe City Council has endorsed an agreement with the South East Melbourne Phoenix to bring National Basketball League (NBL) action back to Gippsland for the next two seasons, continuing a successful partnership that has delivered elite sport and significant economic benefits to the region.
Council has approved funding for two South East Melbourne Phoenix in-season matches to be hosted in Latrobe City during the 2026/27 and 2027/28 NBL seasons.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, is delighted about the ongoing partnership.
"Not only do South East Melbourne Phoenix put on an incredible show when they're in town, they're also very generous with their time in the community and that's something really special. They've visited schools to teach skills to local children and they've tried out our disc golf course in Churchill - we just love having them here."
The agreement builds on a strong partnership between Latrobe City Council, the Victorian Government, NBL and the South East Melbourne Phoenix, with the region having hosted six Phoenix matches over the past five years.
South East Melbourne Phoenix CEO Simon Derrick recently visited Latrobe City to celebrate the completion of upgrades to the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium. The upgrades include new and refurbished changerooms and amenities, solar panels and batteries, upgraded lighting, foyer improvements, new broadcasting facilities and more.
"We are so pleased to announce this partnership extension and the chance to further deepen our connection with the community who are always so supportive and welcoming. We would also like to pass on our appreciation for the ongoing investment in the facilities. This will further enhance our games, for all our stakeholders, but will also deliver ongoing benefits for the community to enjoy throughout the years ahead," said Mr Derrick.
The games are expected to deliver a projected economic impact of about $650,000 per event. In addition to the direct economic benefits, the events provide opportunities for community engagement, inspire participation in sport and showcase Latrobe City to a broader audience.
Council officers will work closely with relevant user groups once match dates are confirmed to minimise disruption to regular programming and ensure successful event delivery.
The events will be funded through Council's existing Major Event Attraction budget.
South East Melbourne Pheonix will be facing Perth Wildcats at Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium on 13 December 2026 at 5pm. Ticketing information will be announced at a later date via semphoenix.com.au
