Social justice law firm Maurice Blackburn has welcomed today's announcement that Woolworths will not proceed with a proposed Dan Murphy's store near Darwin's airport.
Last month, the law firm launched legal proceedings on behalf of Northern Territory health service Danila Dilba over the approval of the liquor store.
The legal action, filed in the NT Supreme Court, alleges the Liquor Licensing Director's approval of the proposed store was unlawful.
Maurice Blackburn special counsel Jacinta Lewin, said:
"We welcome Woolworth's announcement that the Dan Murphy's store near Darwin will not be built.
"The proposal has been at the centre of a long and hard-fought battle over alcohol-related harm in Darwin.
"It is positive to see Woolworths highlight the importance of listening and consulting with Aboriginal communities.
"We note the announcement does not rule out the building of further Dan Murphy's stores elsewhere in Darwin.
"If any new liquor outlets are proposed for other sites, it is important that Woolworths continues to work with impacted communities to minimise the risk of alcohol related harm.
"We are considering what, if any, impact today's announcement will have on the legal action, and look forward to reading the independent review report in full."
